Known first as an ancient Geek and later Roman city, Buthrotum provides everything for fans of ancient history and archaeology. “In modern times it is an archeologicalsite in Vlorë County, Albania, some 14 kilometres south of Sarandë and close to the Greek border.” Remains of the ancient theater, baptistery, basilica and an exhibition of the local archaeological excavations will let you discover the Albanian history like nowhere else.
We recommend to combine the exploration of Buthrotum with a visit to the nearby Gjirokastër; “on a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described as “a rare example of a well-preserved Ottomantown, built by farmers of large estate.”
